Northborough Trails Committee - Upcoming Events

Welcome to the Upcoming Events list for Northboro trail work. We are a group of regional volunteers that love to hike and maintain the trails of metrowest Boston, more specifically in and around Northborough, MA. Get involved and come out to one of our events that includes trail maintenance, guided hikes, and a variety of other regional nature activities.

2009 Applefest Wrap-Up

The Northborough Trail Committee booth at Applefest attracted a lot of people yesterday. Some folks were from neighboring towns who were unaware of the extensive trail system in Northborough, and others were long-time hikers on one particular trail looking to expand their repertoire. We talked to mountain bikers, snow shoers, skiers, walkers, people with pups, etc. I was handing out maps left and right and sensed a great deal of enthusiasm.

I'd like to thank all the NTC volunteers for making this such a great day. Earlier in the month, George had all the necessary materials printed and worked with the Applefest committee on the details for the booth. Claude, Scott, Nancy and Charlie were at the booth all day handing out materials and promoting the trail network.

It was great to see Art Cole (our Founder) who stopped by for a nice talk with the group.

Ready for Applefest

I was out yesterday with the trimmer, clearing the weeds, grass, etc from Coyote Trail, Bird Song Trail and Tall Grass trail. I saw a few people on the trail and let them know they could stop by the NTC table at Applefest to get maps of all the trails and expert advice on pretty much anything.

Today, Jim Stone dropped the NTC Maintenance Trailer off at the model airplane field near Lil' Chauncy Pond. I ran the mower all around there and also the trimmer, so the area is now ready for the big influx of visitors that will certainly occur following Applefest. I spoke with Jim about the need for some sort of hedge trimmer attachment that could be added to the brush trimmer to cut the growth that hangs over the trail from above. I'm going to look into whether Honda makes such an attachment for our trimmer.

Greg Farrell, an Eagle Scout Candidate with Troop 1 B.S.A. in Northborough is working on his Eagle Scout Project under the auspices of the Northborough Trails Committee. His project is a significant amount of work on the Cold Harbor Trail at the Cherry Street end. Greg has scheduled to work on installing new boardwalk and other tasks on Sunday 8/23/09 beginning at 9:00am, and he could use as many volunteers as possible to help complete the work. If you can come please wear approprate clothing, bring sunscreen, bug spray, gloves and eye protection. Please email me if you can come and help so I can let Greg know how many people to count on. We'll be meeting on Cherry Street across the street from Phil Gott's home (the farm house) near the meadow.

Northborough Trails Committee members Claude Guerlain and Scott Karpuk will be leading three snow shoe hikes on NTC trails this winter, however the hikes are organized through the Appalachian Mountain Club, Worcester Chapter.

Participants will be required to sign an AMC Assumption of Risks and Release Form the day of the hike. You don't have to be an AMC member to participate, however, AMC members will be given priority and if the hike fills up non-AMC members will be wait listed.
